Being from Dennis, my memories of Dennisport over the years never inlcuded fine restaurants and entertaining night life. Back when I was in high school, we would only go to Dennisport by convertible up and down Old Wharf Road and occasionally make an appearance at Jason’s, which was the only “club” in the area.

Recently, however, I am seeing a resurgence in the restaurant and bar scene in Dennisport. Many of the new establishments have moved into older builders or built new, transforming this downtown on Rt. 28 fun for both locals and tourists.

Among the first to help transform Dennisport is Chapin’s Fish and Chips in the heart of the action just down the street from one of the long-lasting ice cream establishments on Cape Cod, the Sundae School. Chapin’s Fish and Chips is the sister restaurant to Chapin’s Restaurant on the Route 6A side of Dennis.

The atmosphere is family friendly; the menu is Cape Cod at its best, with fantastic fried and broiled seafood fare. If you can break away from the kids for a bit, there is a cozy bar with a knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Another early improvement to Dennisport was the Oyster Company which sits just off Route 28. This gem serves some of the best raw oysters you will find anywhere on the Cape, as well as a great menu that consists of creative and delicious creations. They have a nice outdoor sitting area and a bar that is consistently busy. Great service, cold oysters and a fun adult crowd; this is a tough place to pass up.
While I love a good meal served in a upscale restaurant, I also love coming off the beach and listening to some live music and enjoying a perfect hamburger. The Improper Bostonian and the Sand Dollar Bar and Grill on Lower County Road are two locales for this.

I love the cheeseburger at the Sand Dollar. Perfectly cooked to order with fresh sides, a fantastic bun along with a cold beer – my mouth is watering just writing about it. Make sure to check out the live music.

The newly refurbished Improper Bostonian features live rock and country bands Wednesday through Sunday. Shoot some pool there too.

The new Red Nun Bar and Grill on Route 28 in the heart of downtown is beautifully decorated with a fantastic menu. It’s a sports bar to catch the Sox while downing buffalow wings and their many draft beers. The original Red Nun is in Chatham.

It’s exciting to see Dennisport making a revival. Beyond the food, new businesses, including several artists, are making downtown their new home.

Luxx will be taking a full tour of Dennisport this summer. Stay tuned.
