Communicating When Aboard a BoatAdd to My Luxx Living
When onboard a boat, communication can be accomplished by using your personal cell phone or your vessel’s VHF RADIO.
Emergency and information calling VHF channels 16/9 are contact frequencies only.
Working channels (chat) are: 68, 69, 71, 72, 78
Channel 13 is for bridge openings.
Don’t’ “walk on” other broadcasts. Wait for others to finish talking and then proceed.
Weather is also available on the VHF radio and can be accessed by pressing the WX button.
Distress Calls (MAYDAY) May be issued in situations involving risk of life or grave and immediate danger.
Urgency Calls (PAN-PAN) are issued in situations that pose a serious, but not immediate threat.
Safety Calls (SECURITE) are used for matters that concern navigation and safety. Large vessels leaving port, floating debris, damaged or off -station buoys, injured marine mammals, etc.
