Along Historic Route 6a – Parnassus Book StoreAdd to My Luxx Living
Parnassus Book Store
There are many independent book stores on the Cape, but none may be as unique and eclectic as Parnassus. Among the first features you encounter is its outdoor display of books flanking the building’s eastern side. Protected by a plastic overhang, the books remain outdoors year round. Beyond surviving the Cape’s weather, this display says a lot about Cape Cod itself. The owners have trusted that the books would not be stolen, and so far, that trust has been well rewarded.
Ben Muse began selling books from the former Knowles General Store in 1959. Now in its third generation, the family-owned store sells new, old and often rare books along a wide range of genres including Americana, Latin America, Maritime, Russia, Art, the Orient, as well as Cape Cod and the works of the Edward Gorey, who lived nearby – and whose home now is a museum (closed in the winter).
Inside, you can spend a day or more walking the many narrow shelves filled to the ceiling. There always is a discovery among the eclectically organized stacks of used and new books. There’s always someone close by to help steer you to what you may be seeking, but much of the fun at Parnassus is simply getting lost among the possibilities.
