Along Historic Route 6a – Cape CinemaAdd to My Luxx Living
This historic venue – now an independent art film house – has been entertaining Cape Codders for eight decades, originally with live performances and music. Opening in 1930, its Art Deco design – and especially – ceiling features more than 300 individual arm chairs. Today, these original black lacquer and tangerine suede seats are covered in white linen.
Get there early not just for the previews, but to get lost in the unique 6,400-square-foot mural on the ceiling, designed by American painter Rockwell Kent. It depicts a vision of the heavens, offering comets, galaxies and constellations alongside pairs of dancing lovers. Beware of getting a stiff neck.
The movie fare here can rival New York independent cinemas. In addition to movies, the Cape Cinema is host to simulcasts of the Metropolitan Opera and the National Theater.
